Monday Jan 15 - A Manly Day!

Manly as in Beach that is. Today looked like the better of the next two (it’s still unusually cool here) so we decided it was a good day for a ferry ride over to Manly and a bit of a hike.  Indeed, it turned out to be a perfect day to do just that.

We also wanted to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House as we were going that way and the route did not disappoint. We started out with a walk through the central business district and it was interesting to see Sydneyites(?) going about their day.  Pretty much like Vancouverites but perhaps the dress standards are a little higher.  There are definitely some very smartly dressed people here (as well as a few eccentric ones too!)

We arrived at Circular Quay where the ferries go from and once again were impressed by how efficient transportation systems are here.  An Opal card gets you on pretty much anything - tap on, tap off.  It’s exactly the same as Vancouver’s Compass card - why on earth did it take us so long and so much money to exactly recreate what other cities have had for a long time? And Uber - don’t get us started on pondering why Vancouver is dragging it’s feet on this!

The ferry was terrific riding through Sydney Harbour and the spectacular series of bays and inlets that make up the surrounding communities.  On arrival in Manly we got straight on the bus and rode out to Spit Bridge, the start of the Manly Scenic Walk.  You can do this walk in either direction but we elected to walk towards Manly and end there.  It’s a beautiful walk continually climbing and falling from beach to bay via headlands, cliff walks and communities along the way.  It’s a really taxing hike of about 10km and those of you who know us will know we hike a lot.  My watch rewarded me with this at the end of the hike,

Here are just some of the pictures from the walk.

There are aboriginal carvings to see along the way and the variety of scenery keeps it continually interesting.

We finished in Manly and had late lunch there. Sorry Manly, the fish and chips was fine but not worth an eating entry in the blog.

The beach here is spectacular, here are a couple of shots looking each way.

No, I didn’t forget the bridge and opera house.

Tomorrow we may take it easy(?) with some shopping.
