Monday Jan 22 - The Family Reunion!

Just as planned, a family reunion on Grayson’s 6th birthday!

But first, what would you do if you heard an air raid warning siren? Duck, expect a tsunami, run outside in your pyjamas for reassurance?  Well, last night, just as we were ready for bed a siren went off so loud outside our room that the only explanation that came to mind was an incoming North Korean missile! We ran outside to greet our fellow motel guests and after all looking at each other in mass confusion somebody produced the instructions that the motel had clearly prepared and placed in each room on what to do - that none of us had read! Do nothing.  In New Zealand many of the towns have volunteer fire departments and this is how they alert the fire crews to respond.  Wow, was it loud, and it went on for some time.  The same thing happened tonight in Papamoa but now we know what it is.  We’re not sure how they would signal a real public emergency - we hope not to find out!

We had a great night’s stay otherwise in Coromandel and started out with breakfast in the town.  These were our breakfast companions, very bold little sparrows.

This time we drove down the open Pacific east side south and took in the beautiful scenery. Note to the Fukawi, if you like curves one trip on this road will be enough for the rest of your life. Neither of us have ever been on a road that twists up and down so much.

We arrived at our Airbnb mid afternoon and checked in with our host Delwyn who brought fresh peaches from the garden.

We didn’t delay but headed straight over to Scott and Monique’s lovely new house which is about 20 minutes away.  Their furniture just arrived a day or so back and they are finally able to start setting up their home. We are going to help them with this as they are both so busy with work and kids on summer holidays.

The kids are very happy to have acquired a trampoline. This is Grayson with his cousin Mila who is staying for a week.

We are high up in the hills tonight looking over Papamoa, another beautiful seaside area and now the fastest growing municipal area in New Zealand.
